spice blend with pumpkin pie flavors

I love how the fall season brings pumpkin everything to the table and the bar. If you want to try some decadent pumpkin recipes these holidays, I recommend making my pumpkin pie or a homemade pumpkin roll cake, and both use this spice blend to elevate their flavor.

    Pumpkin Pie Spice

Pumpkin pie spice blend is a simple mix of warm spices that I use in many of my favorite pumpkin recipes. You can buy it pre made at the store, but as a Chef, I always prefer making it at home so I know exactly what ingredients I am adding to my food.

My recipe is very easy to prepare and will last as long as your other dry spices. Every year I make a couple of jars since I host quite a lot during the holiday season, and I end up using this blend in pretty much everything.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

These are the non negotiable ingredients I use to make this pumpkin pie spice recipe.

    • Cinnamon – I use cinnamon as the main spice because it provides sweetness to the blend.
    • Ground Ginger – I add ground ginger for a little brightness that lifts all the other spices. If I run out, I use fresh ginger very lightly or a touch of allspice as the closest dry option.
    • Nutmeg – I love adding nutmeg because it gives a cozy earthy note that fits so well with pumpkin.
    • Ground Cloves – Cloves are strong, so I use them to bring depth and a hint of spice. If you do not have ground cloves, allspice works well too.

Blend: I use a fork or a whisk to mix everything until it is fully combined. I use it right away or I cover it and store it for later.

    chef tip + notes

I always sift the spices before mixing because it breaks up any clumps, especially in cinnamon and ground ginger. This keeps the blend smooth and even, which is key when you add it to batters, pies, or drinks.

    • Use fresh spices: I always check that my spices are fresh because old spices lose their strength and the blend will not taste as warm or fragrant.
    • Mix in a wide bowl: I use a medium sized bowl with room to stir so the spices combine evenly without spilling.
    • Shake before using: I give the jar a quick shake before adding the spice blend to recipes so all the flavors stay well mixed.

    Make-Ahead and Storage

Make-Ahead: You can make this up to 1 month ahead of time.

How to Store: Cover and keep in a cool dark place for up to 3 months.
