Umami Grilled Turkey Burger Recipe

In an age where there is a new burger joint on every street corner of every city, I figured I would partake from my own kitchen and knock out a one of a kind Umami Grilled Turkey Burger Recipe.  If you’re not familiar with Umami, it’s one of the 5 basic tastes and is described as savory.  It’s really that deliciousness you taste when the right savory ingredients come together.  To achieve this flavor in this Umami Grilled Turkey Burger Recipe, I’ve combined fresh ginger, fresh garlic, green onions and soy sauce.  Together the flavors are ridiculous and it only gets better with the fresh veggies and Rice Wine Vinaigrette that goes on top.  This burger is not by any means difficult to make but there are a few steps, so make sure to follow them closely!  To make it a bit easier though, feel free to buy sweet soy sauce from your grocery store, you don’t have to make it homemade.  Also, be sure to serve them with a side of Sweet Potato Fries Recipe with Sriracha Mayonnaise or Fried Green Beans Recipe.

I served it up on a pretzel but and it was pretty dang good.  A traditional sesame but would be great as well.

Umami Grilled Turkey Burger Recipe
 
Make this Umami Grilled Turkey Burger Recipe at your next backyard barbecue. Learn how to make a sweetened soy sauce that goes perfect with these burgers.
Ingredients
For the Burger:
  • 1 pound of ground turkey breast
  • 1 pound of ground turkey thigh
  • ⅓ cup of sliced green onions
  • 3 finely minced cloves of garlic
  • 2 teaspoons of finely minced fresh ginger
  • Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • sesame oil
For the Sweetened Soy Sauce:
  • ½ cup of soy sauce
  • ½ cup of brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of honey
For the Vegetables:
  • 1 small sliced cucumber
  • 1 pint of quartered assorted cherry tomatoes
  • ½ sliced small red onion
  • 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup of rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • Kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. In a medium sized pot add in the soy, brown sugar and honey and cook on medium-high heat until it becomes thick like syrup. Take note that it will cook fast and can burn easily so watch closely. Once it is cooked, remove from the heat and let cool.
  2. In a large bowl mix together both ground turkey meats, green onions, ginger, garlic , salt and pepper and form 6 patties. Next, brush the outside of the burger patties with sesame oil and cook on a very hot grill (450° to 550°) on each side until grill marks are formed and the burgers are cooked through (about 4 to 6 minutes on each side). Once they are cooked, set aside to rest for a few minutes before serving.
  3. In a separate bowl mix together the mayonnaise, rice wine vinegar and sugar and add in the cucumber slices, quartered cherry tomatoes and red onions and mix.
  4. Toast the buns on the grill and serve the turkey burgers on each of them. Top off by drizzling on 1 teaspoon of the sweetened soy and a few tablespoons of the mixed vegetables.
